Indigenous traditional knowledge is an essential part of indigenous health systems.

In 2000 the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) had established an Intergovernmental Committee with a mandate to discuss intellectual property issues arising from access to genetic resources and benefit sharing, and the protection of traditional knowledge and folklore.

It further includes the knowledge that is the result of intellectual activity and insight in a traditional context, and includes the know how, skills, innovations, practices and learning that form part of traditional knowledge systems, as well as knowledge that is embodied in the traditional lifestyle of an indigenous people, or is contained in codified knowledge systems passed between generations.

Traditional knowledge There is a clear lack of connection between traditional knowledge and scientific understanding of the same phenomena.

The LINKS project also reinforces the intergenerational transmission of indigenous traditional knowledge, including through the development of pedagogical materials and methods based on traditional knowledge.
