Throughout the review period there have been remarkable initiatives and activities by civil society organizations, particularly in the areas of social services, environment and local and community development.

Many community organizations are funded to provide services under this programme and many services provide crisis housing to ex prisoners, including indigenous women.

Others act as NGOs or autonomous organizations, like the Village Industry Service (VIS) in Zambia which promotes small scale industries in rural areas.

One of the Department's objectives for the coming year is to enhance partnerships through the development of a digital social services map for use by social workers and community based organization volunteers.

Of those countries that responded, 59.6 per cent and 57.9 per cent, respectively, indicated that they provided rehabilitation services to organizations of persons with disabilities and to the families of persons with disabilities while 46.5 per cent and 47.4 per cent, respectively, offered community based services and covered the needs of all types of disabilities.

Training initiatives of this sort should be accomplished by information dissemination initiatives, complemented by the establishment of small grants for non governmental and community based organizations that meet criteria related to serving the affected populations in the Semipalatinsk region, with a particular emphasis on social service and environmental issues.

In August 1997, a technical review of CRC services in Jordan was conducted jointly by UNRWA, an international non governmental organization and a local non governmental organization.

Community based organizations that work with persons with disabilities are engaged in providing enhanced service delivery capacity such as job coaching, training and adaptive equipment.

These projects encourage rural women to organize themselves to defend their rights as women and in seeking and organizing community services.
