Representatives of DLR, ESA and the Centre national d'études spatiales (CNES) of France delivered the keynote presentations.

The mission control centre near Moscow and the Cosmonauts apos training centre in Star City have been connected with the ESA establishments (ESTEC, EAC, ESOC, ESA HQ) and the control centres Toulouse and Oberpfaffenhofen, respectively.

REGIONAL CENTRES FOR SPACE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

That membership has been taken over by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), which was created on 1 October 1997 through the merger of DARA and the German Aerospace Research Establishment.

Cooperating national centres in the Mediterranean region include the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences in Egypt, the Royal Jordanian Geographic Centre, the Centre for Remote Sensing and Space Science in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and the National Centre for Remote Sensing in Tunisia.

6 The national core institutions for this network are the Bulgarian Space Agency (Bulgaria), the Greek Centre for Space Science and Technology (Greece), the Hungarian Space Agency (Hungary), the Space Research Centre (Poland), the National Institute for Aerospace Research (Romania), the Slovak Hydrometeorologic Institute (Slovakia) and the Marmara Research Centre (Turkey).

Several initiatives are filling that gap, such as the United Nations Organization Satellite (UNOSAT), RESPOND and the facility for the Center for Satellite Based Crisis Information (ZKI) of the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

The activities are funded mainly by DARA and ESA ESOC.

The Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific became operational in November 1995 and will be followed by centres in Latin America and the Caribbean and in Africa, to be established by the end of 1997.

The British National Space Centre co sponsored the Second European Conference on Space Debris held at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) during March 1997.

The activities in 1996 were mainly funded by ESA ESOC.
