Blame the Economists, Not Economics

I talk to a lot of economists, and back in the '70s and '80s it was ugly being an economist.

Sperling is fundamentally different from the typical academic economist, who tends to concentrate on advancing economic theory and statistics. He concentrates on legislation that is, practical things that might be accomplished to lift the economy.

So economists tend to talk in technical words.

That is what economists do.

But I believe that corruption is not the main reason that the profession missed the crisis. Most economists have very little interaction with the corporate world, and these unbiased economists were no better at forecasting the crisis.

But then, again, sometimes economists get it wrong.

Economic historians call this The Great Divergence.

And basically what you'll see is what economists talk about as the polarization of the economy.

Psychologists, medical scientists, economists were all interested in finding out the rules that govern the way all of us behave.

And then it will have what economists call external effects on a local economy.

And then you ask, why economists?

Now I'm an economist, I'm not a doctor, but I see the God complex around me all the time in my fellow economists.

Or as some economists call it, present bias.

The Cambridge University prefects decided to call them the Real Madrid of economics.

And what psychologists and behavioral economists have discovered is that by and large people use two simple rules.
