The Force had intercepted tons of heroin and other drugs bound for Europe and North America.

In 1996, UNDCP provided assistance in law enforcement to China, the Lao People apos s Democratic Republic, Myanmar and Thailand to enhance the capacity of their competent agencies to interdict and seize narcotic drugs, especially in border areas.

Enhanced law enforcement efforts have yielded higher volumes of drug seizures.

The efforts of UNODC will strengthen the drug interdiction and border control capacity of national and regional drug law enforcement bodies.

Both the number of countries reporting heroin and cocaine seizures as well as amounts of these drugs seized increased in the 1990s compared with the previous decade, although the amounts seized registered the steeper rise.

The DEA continues to place marijuana alongside heroin and LSD as drugs with high abuse potential even though the DEA's own former chief administrative law judge, Francis Young, disagreed with this.

One constraint upon efforts to intercept international drug trafficking appears to be that, as some of the seized drugs are replaced, if illicit drug demand is not reduced through interception, then seizures may have the inadvertent effect of stimulating illicit cultivation.
