2. The mandate of UNTAES ended on 15 January 1998.

The constitutional referendum is scheduled to be held before the expiration of the first extension of the transition on 31 December.

On 17 June, the Senate and the National Assembly, in a joint decision, approved the extension of the transition for a period of six months, under article 196 of the Transitional Constitution and, on 23 June, President Kabila promulgated the referendum law.

4. On 30 July 1997, the Security Council, by its resolution 1123 (1997), established the United Nations Transition Mission in Haiti (UNTMIH) with a mandate limited to a single four month period ending on 30 November 1997.

The Advisory Committee also considered the report of the Secretary General on the revised budget for the maintenance of UNSMIH for the month of July 1997, the maintenance of the United Nations Transition Mission in Haiti (UNTMIH) for the period from 1 August to 30 November 1997 and the liquidation of UNTMIH thereafter (A 52 869).

The United Nations Transition Mission in Haiti (UNTMIH) was subsequently established by the Security Council on 30 July 1997 (resolution 1123 (1997)) for a single four month period.

The delays in convening the Transitional National Assembly and forming the Transitional Government reduced the time available for completing the draft constitution by the deadline of 15 August, as stipulated by the Transitional Administrative Law.

A new period has been set, to end with the transition period on 16 July 1999, during which the detention periods will be as follows

The number increased rapidly during the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) supervised transitional period, which allowed an opening of the country after almost a decade and a half of international isolation.

The Security Council looks forward to the seating of the Transitional National Assembly and the formation of a new Transitional Government of Iraq in the near future.

On 12 May, the National Transitional Legislative Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an extension of the voter registration period.

The conclusion of the transition period with the election of Mr. Pierre Nkurunziza to the office of President of the Republic on 19 August 2005, the swearing in of the President of the Republic on 26 August 2005 and the appointment of the first post transition Government on 30 August 2005.

The Transitional Administrative Law required 20 elections to be held simultaneously, for the Transitional National Assembly, 18 governorate councils and the Kurdistan Assembly, by no later than 31 January 2005.

2. Following the expiry of the final mandate of UNSMIH on 31 July 1997, the Security Council, by its resolution 1123 (1997) of 30 July 1997, established the United Nations Transition Mission in Haiti (UNTMIH) whose mandate ended on 30 November 1997.
