The Congress of Vienna Revisited

Fourteenth International Congress on Penal Law, Vienna, 1989.

During the session, the Commission accepted the invitation of the Government of Austria to host the Congress in Vienna.

Of the three treaties, the one produced by the Congress of Vienna offers a sort of mirror image to help us understand the specificity of our current conditions. In Vienna, the European powers were among themselves.

On 9 February 2005, the delegation of Thailand held an informal briefing for permanent missions in Vienna on the arrangements for the Congress.

The Tenth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders was held in Vienna from 10 to 17 April 2000.

Exhibits were set up to promote the work of UNODC at several different conferences and events taking place in Vienna and elsewhere, including at the Eleventh Congress.

Recalling further the Vienna Declaration on Crime and Justice Meeting the Challenges of the Twenty first Century, adopted by the Tenth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, held in Vienna from 10 to 17 April 2000, and the plans of action for the implementation of the Vienna Declaration, and welcoming the progress made by Member States in implementing the Vienna Declaration and its plans of action,

Recalling also the Vienna Declaration on Crime and Justice Meeting the Challenges of the Twenty first Century,Resolution 55 59, annex. which emanated from the Tenth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, held in Vienna from 10 to 17 April 2000,

During the high level segment of the Tenth Congress, the Vienna Declaration on Crime and Justice Meeting the Challenges of the Twenty first Century (General Assembly resolution 55 59, annex) was adopted.

On 20 February 2004, the Secretary General of the United Nations appointed Antonio Maria Costa, Executive Director of UNODC and Director General of the United Nations Office at Vienna, Secretary General of the Eleventh Congress.
