The budget provides 3 million for the transport of contingent owned transport by rail, including port and customs cost and 1 million for transport of contingent owned equipment by ship.

OSZhD supervises the application of the Agreement on International Rail Transport of Goods (SMGS) which facilitates the harmonization of tariffs and documentation.

ECA organized the forum on transport infrastructure and regional integration for Central Africa in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from 15 to 18 December 2003 designed to adopt a subregional transport master plan that covered road, rail, air and inland water transport.

99. Latin American Federation of Freight Forwarding associations (ALACAT) collaborates with UNCTAD in the promotion of international multimodal transport in Latin America.

Rail transport, once a dominant mode of transport along the transit corridors in several subregions, namely the Southern, Eastern and West Central African subregions, has in recent years increasingly come under pressure from road transport largely because of the inefficiency of the railway systems.

There has been close cooperation with ESCAP in the area of transport and shipping for many years, starting in ports and expanding to freight forwarding, multimodal transport (MT) and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).

It also provides for essential additional logistical requirements under premises, transport and air operations, communications, supplies and services and commercial freight and cartage.

Additional provision is made for freight charges for equipment and items that require shipment by air since surface transport is slow and insecure.

Enforcing the practical implementation of respective laws and regulations, nuclear and radiation control devices for road and rail transport are installed in all major border crossing points.

In respect of transit traffic undertaken by rail transport on the basis of this Agreement, procedures and rules of the Organization for Railway Cooperation shall be applied.

21. The existence of three alternative railway lines passing through Kazakhstan towards Moscow, the Baltic region and Western Europe makes rail transport the most convenient means of transport in the east west direction from Central Asia (see map 3).
