UNOMIG's civilian police component continued to operate on the Zugdidi side of the ceasefire line.

On 4 June, an exchange of fire took place between a group of smugglers from the Abkhaz controlled side of the ceasefire line and Georgian police near the ceasefire line in Shamgona one perpetrator was wounded and arrested.

After further negotiation, the Turkish Forces removed the sign and agreed to honour the ceasefire line.

These programmes target the most vulnerable groups, mostly on the Abkhaz side of the ceasefire line.

This hampered cross ceasefire line cooperation, hindered progress in criminal investigations and limited the effectiveness of preventive anti crime efforts.

The Abkhaz authorities remained reluctant to allow the deployment of UNOMIG police advisers on the Gali side of the ceasefire line.

It has been over 11 years now that a ceasefire regime was established on the front line between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Compared with the same period in 2003, fewer killings were recorded, but robberies increased significantly, in particular in villages along the ceasefire line.

The UNOMIG civilian police component continued to operate on the Zugdidi side of the ceasefire line, where it maintained good cooperation with local law enforcement agencies.

My country attaches great importance to the efforts being made by UNIFIL to preserve the ceasefire along the Blue Line, resolve incidents and prevent acts of violence.

During the period under review, UNOMIG continued to conduct regular patrolling of the security zone and the restricted weapons zone on both sides of the ceasefire line.

Also, there is a large area on both sides of the ceasefire line between the parties in which criminal elements can operate with little or no restraint.

Beyond the Gaza Ceasefire

UNDOF also supervised the handover of a Syrian boy who had crossed the ceasefire line. Within the means available, medical treatment was provided to the local population on request.

358. On 8 April, it was reported that the Government intended to lodge a complaint with the United Nations Disengagement Observation Force about ditches being dug along the Syrian side of the Golan Heights ceasefire line on the grounds that they constituted a breach of the ceasefire agreement.

However, the maintenance of the ceasefire regime will ultimately depend on a recommitment of the parties to their ceasefire undertakings.

The situation along the ceasefire line remained generally calm, although criminal activities continued to highlight the lack of effective law enforcement and low confidence among the local population in the existing local law enforcement agencies.

Also on the same day, two RF 4 planes entered the Nicosia flight information region at 1145 hours in violation of international civil aviation regulations, flying along the ceasefire line and exiting at 1236 hours.

The parties undertook to submit figures on the strength of their armed personnel in the conflict zone, samples of their identification documents and proposals for establishing additional hot lines between the law enforcement agencies across the ceasefire line.

The ceasefire agreement of 3 May 2003 has remained shaky.

The impact of the six months of ceasefire was striking.

Despite the positive influence of UNIFIL's presence on the ground, we must not forget that, as stated in operative paragraph 8 of the resolution, Israel and Lebanon bear the primary responsibility for maintaining the ceasefire and respecting the withdrawal line.

However, the refusal of the Abkhaz side to allow the deployment of civilian police on the Gali side continued to hamper cross ceasefire line cooperation, to hinder progress in criminal investigations and to limit the effectiveness of preventive anti criminal efforts.
