ITHACA Scarcely a week passes without news about the ascendance of China s currency, the renminbi. But China has a long way to go before its currency can rival let alone displace the US dollar as the dominant global reserve currency.

They're the dominant builders and to a large extent, the dominant designers.

A dominant position is a prerequisite for the abuse of dominant position.

Two truths are dominant.

Given the role of the US dollar as the dominant global currency, the Fed s expansionary monetary policy generates significant externalities for the rest of the world effects that the Fed is certainly not taking into account. The basic problem is that there are essential imperfections in an international monetary system that is based on the use of a national currency as the world s main reserve currency.

Even if China replaces the US as the world s largest economy within a decade, an anchor currency can be more resilient than the economic and geopolitical dominance of its country of origin. That is why the dollar will most likely remain the dominant global currency long after the US has been surpassed.

One possibility is a gradual, market determined erosion of the dollar as a reserve currency in favor of the euro. But, while the euro s international role especially its use in financial markets has increased since its inception, it is hard to envisage it overtaking the dollar as the dominant reserve currency in the foreseeable future.

Dissatisfaction with the dollar s role as the dominant global reserve currency is not new. In the 1960s, French Finance Minister Valéry Giscard d Estaing famously condemned the exorbitant privilege that the dollar s status bestowed upon the United States.
