Of the roughly 200 trillion in global financial assets today, almost three quarters are in some kind of debt instrument, including bank loans, corporate bonds, and government securities. Cat bonds have been growing in importance in recent years. According to estimates by Lane Financial, there were 1.8 billion worth of cat bonds issued in the year April 2004 March 2005.

The low interest rate on long term Treasury bonds has also boosted demand for other long term assets that promise higher yields, including equities, farm land, high yield corporate bonds, gold, and real estate. When interest rates rise, the prices of those assets will fall as well.

Given the severity of this economic and financial crisis, financial markets will not mend for a while.
