151. The pensions scheme is revised from time to time.

Its terms are identical to those of the civil pensions scheme.

Conditions for the granting of loans by the social security funds were also harmonized, and certain requirements of the retirement pensions scheme in the non agricultural private sector were brought into line with the public sector retirement pensions scheme.

The operation of the pension scheme is regulated by the Law On State Pensions, enacted on 2 November 1995.

The Department of Pensions has devised a scheme to make available the commuted pension cheque on the day of retirement itself.

Long term social security pays retirement pensions and old age pensions, invalidity pensions, survivor apos s pensions, civil invalidity pensions, military invalidity pensions and social pensions.

134. As regards pensioners, 29 per cent of all single pensioners and more than 43 per cent of retired couples receive pensions under the special civil servant pension scheme or another labour market pension scheme.

160. The local government pension scheme which had been administered by the Local Government Department was brought under the authority of the Director of Pensions in January 1990.

Paragraph 2 of the pension scheme regulations reads as follows Pensions in payment shall be automatically revised by the same percentage and on the same date as salary adjustments .

The operation of the scheme is regulated by the Law On State Funded Pensions that was enacted in 17 February 2000 and became effective as of 1 July 2001.

These persons are entitled to retirement pensions, invalidity pensions and survivor apos s pensions under the prevailing conditions.

This scheme covers members of the local government service serving in municipalities, town councils, Pradeshiya Sabas, etc., and their pensions were paid out of the Local Government Service Pension Fund.

Persons who have reached the retirement age pursuant to the Law On State Pensions of 2 November 1995, as participants of the pension scheme have the right to the old age pension.

The old age pensions may be drawn as full pensions or partial pensions (one third, one half or two thirds of the full pension).

The disability pensions are indexed in the same manner as all other state pensions.

(c) Supplements to the basic pensions

216. Disability pensions and survivor apos s pensions with respect to employment related accidents or occupational diseases are calculated in the same way as pensions payable as a result of other events.

When there are lots of companies offering workers long term defined benefit retirement pensions, there are fewer advantages to the government in setting up a parallel defined benefit scheme and requiring workers to participate in it. After all, in such a world, workers who set great value on a defined benefit pension can go to work for firms that offer such pensions.
