Enrolment in primary education is high in Sri Lanka.

Gross enrolment in primary schools now averages 99 per cent.

Through that programme, the enrolment of pupils in primary schools increased tremendously.

In some countries, primary education enrolment and adult literacy had increased markedly.

Between 1960 and 1990, enrolment in primary and secondary school had vastly increased.

Bangladesh has one of the highest primary school enrolment rates in the developing world.

Enrolment in primary education is almost 100 per cent for the given age group.

Primary school enrolment in Kenya has also increased tremendously due to the implementation of free primary education programmes in the last two years.

Within a decade, the primary school enrolment rate had more than doubled to 70 per cent.

Most importantly, we have achieved gender parity in enrolment at the primary and lower secondary levels.

Nationally, there are no striking differences in primary and secondary schools enrolment as Table 4 show.

The adult literacy rate was 68 per cent and primary school enrolment was 90 per cent.

Bangladesh had the highest primary school enrolment rates in the developing world and had already achieved gender parity in both primary and secondary schools.

In Kuwait, there was a high literacy and school enrolment rate for girls and women, who represented more than 50 per cent of primary and secondary school enrolment, and more than 37 per cent of enrolment at the university level.

The Committee notes with concern, however, the very low enrolment of children in pre school and primary school and the even lower enrolment in secondary school, in particular of girls.

Such programmes contribute to higher primary school enrolment and completion rates, and to the retention of female teachers.

Consequently, it had already achieved the Goal for primary education, with a net enrolment of 98.3 per cent.

The national plan of action on education set the goal of universal enrolment in primary school by 2015.

Even given the paucity of resources, the gross enrolment rate in primary education in 2004 was 97 per cent.

Over the past decade an increase in net enrolment in primary education has been achieved, and in 2001 almost 90 per cent of children were enrolled in primary schools.

The highest enrolment rate is in pre primary education and vocational education has the highest drop out rate (Figure 30).

The gross enrolment rate at the primary level of urban females was 87 while that of rural females was 52.

Between 1955 56 and 1994 95 enrolment in primary education increased seven fold from 209,000 to 1,472,844 (see annexed table).

The percentage of indigenous children enrolled in primary school is 11.3, while the national enrolment rate is 85 per cent.

The 2004 2007 Education Plan therefore aims to achieve a net enrolment rate of 75 per cent at the pre primary and 100 per cent at the primary school level.

Also, there are 1,306 Public Daycare Centres with a capacity for 78,000 children (aged from 2 ½ years to their enrolment to primary school) and 132 Daycare Centres for infants and children, with a capacity of 10,000 children, aged from 8 months to their age of enrolment to primary school.

Millions of children will be beyond the age of primary school enrolment when the necessary financial support for education is delivered.

Sixty three (63) of the settlements have primary schools with a total enrolment of 16 492 pupils supported by the RADP.

Following the announcement by President Nkurunziza on 26 August that primary education would be free in Burundi, a significant increase in the enrolment of primary school students was recorded in September.

A third programme provided income to mothers whose children were in school and had pushed primary school enrolment to 98 per cent.

While a significant campaign to increase primary school enrolment has raised the enrolment of girls to almost 40 per cent, compared to 67 per cent for boys, overall school enrolment among girls remains among the lowest in the world, with less than 10 per cent of girls enrolled in secondary school.

Another modest achievement thus far worth mentioning is the introduction of free primary education in the country, which we hope will increase enrolment.

One such form of intervention had been the introduction of free primary education, which had resulted in a spectacular increase of enrolment rates.

In 1989 90, out of a total enrolment of 1,368,732 pupils in the first six years of primary education 95,879 abandoned their schooling.

ENROLMENT

During the 2003 2004 school year, the net primary enrolment rate was 94.4 per cent, while the completion rate rose to 99.82 per cent.

Education enrolment has been successfully completed for 150,000 children, but at least 50 per cent of primary school children are not still in school.

Primary school enrolment had increased to 86 per cent in the 2003 04 academic year although some gender disparity still existed, with enrolment rates for girls and boys being 83 per cent and 89 per cent respectively in 2003 2004.

A significant push to increase primary school enrolments has raised the enrolment of boys to 67 per cent and girls to almost 40 per cent.
