Where the contributions of major donors differ is in the size of the share of general purpose and special purpose donations.

This increase is justified mainly by the anticipated conversion of first time (tsunami related) contributors to regular donors.

Two multi year funding agreements were signed with major donors.

The funding was predominantly for reconstruction and disaster mitigation activities at the country level from a variety of donors.

Most donors provide general purpose contributions, which are primarily for core and programme support activities, and as special purpose contributions, which are exclusively used for project activities.

So the donors have to stick with this situation for at least a decade.

Donors also increased their funding levels.

The next donors meeting will be a regular Donors Conference chaired by the World Bank and is tentatively scheduled for December 1998.

I urge donors to continue lending support to these important projects by making additional contributions to the Trust Fund.

Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden have for many years been major donors.

The Union was already by far the world's largest donor of aid, and it is the major trade partner of poor countries.

I would encourage individual donors to signal their readiness to become lead donors in key areas, including the reintegration of former combatants, the restructuring of the armed forces and police capacity building.

Donors have played a critical role in supporting the decentralization processes.
