Yet the benefits of globalization remain unevenly distributed.

They can't subordinate those interests to the greater global public good.

Although globalization enhanced choice and opportunities, it excluded millions of people, disrupted their lives, threatened their jobs or swept away their traditions.

Global Public Good

In today's global society, business interests increasingly overlap with development objectives.

International cooperation is key to ensuring that the benefits of globalization are shared equitably.

International solidarity was an essential dimension of the common good of the global community.

Will citizens take advantage of the expanding availability of information and networking or will they be increasingly isolated from global trends?

The global programme will be used strategically to leverage diverse global stakeholders to mobilize significant resources for the implementation of these partnerships, with the aim of expanding access to the global knowledge base and enhancing institutional capacity and development effectiveness at the country level.

More of our economics is global in scale.

Multi stakeholder alliances at a global level are growing and try to address global public concerns (e.g., environmental degradation, AIDS).

I am certain that numerous multinational corporations with global business interests would be interested in participating.

As Secretary General Kofi Annan has repeatedly noted, in this globalized, interrelated world, it is the collective interest that is often in our best national interest.

But the context has to remain international, as Africa is inextricably linked to the process of globalization, with all its benefits and challenges.

Many of these countries have found it difficult to turn their implicit comparative advantages into tangible benefits that leverage the opportunities offered by globalization.

Major emphasis will be given to improved cooperation with all stakeholders at the national, regional and global levels.

But perhaps there is another path, one that accepts the authority of national governments, but aims to reorient national interests in a more global direction. Progress along such a path requires national citizens to begin viewing themselves increasingly as global citizens, with interests that extend beyond their state s borders.

The private sector, as the sector that had the most to gain from the process of globalization, should recognize the responsibilities that it bore for the good of all.

Some experts were of the opinion that developing countries in general could benefit from the globalization of R D but could not use it directly to upgrade the competitiveness of their science and technology capabilities.

Globalization could not be based on mere economic profit but must also include respect for social and cultural differences.

Developing countries should work together in partnerships for their own mutual benefits in order to enhance regional, multinational and global ties.
