Recognizing that food security is a global concern, we are committed to respond to the internationally recognized emergency food aid needs and to improve famine prevention mechanisms and long term food security.

In 2001, the FAO Council had adopted the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

Everyone knows that the ration card system instituted by the Government of Iraq to regulate the distribution of food rations to all Iraqis and even to foreigners living in its territory is an integrated, just and comprehensive one.

In 1965, India averaged 854 kilograms of grain per hectare in use, while Sub Saharan Africa averaged almost the same, 773 kilograms per hectare. But, by 2000, India was producing 2,293 kilograms per hectare, while Africa was producing only 1,118.

54. Projects on nutrition in CIS and Central and Eastern European countries involve the strengthening of national food control systems, reformulating national food regulations to bring them into line with international standards, and establishing import export certification programmes.

FAO and the Governments of the affected countries mounted a major control operation, treating more than 12 million hectares of infested land to protect crops.

FAO would prefer that ICSC take a cautious approach and ask the United Nations to hold off until a system wide approach could be considered.

Those restrictions have also generated food insecurity and a decline in nutritional levels.

177. A National Food and Nutrition Policy Project was prepared in 1992.

The programme aims to provide cash or food assistance, in exchange for public works, to some five million people who are subject to chronic food shortages.

Dry and fresh rations

Encourage the efforts of the secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and FAO to establish an open ended working group so that indigenous peoples can become directly involved in the development and implementation of policies that affect food security and food sovereignty of indigenous peoples, including agricultural diversity in indigenous communities.

FAO plays a catalytic role in the United Nations system by developing a food insecurity and vulnerability information and mapping system (FIVIM) at national and international levels to identify the food insecure (their location and number, and the causes of their poverty and food insecurity).
