Zambia would therefore like to see, during this session of the General Assembly, progress on the proposal to convene an international conference on the financing of development.

It is my sincere hope that the CD will proceed in this manner when it begins its 1998 session.

It should not be expected from UNCTAD that it could carry out all necessary responsibilities in this broad domain.

The Conference commended the report of the First Meeting of the OIC Working Group on the 1441 Hijri Vision and urged all the Member States to lend full support to the 1441 Hijri Vision in letter and spirit so as to make science and technology more established and entrenched in order to usher in an era of prosperity in the OIC countries.

The summit just held on progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was not as successful as we had hoped it would be.

In conclusion, my delegation hopes that the Committee's deliberations and decisions will contribute to achieving the aspirations of all nations to security, peace, development and stability.

It expresses the wish that the ongoing work within the group will lead to a positive conclusion at its third session as scheduled.

This special meeting, which is part of the process of assessing progress in the implementation of the Millennium Summit Goals adopted by the United Nations General Assembly five years ago, assumes today a special significance, as peoples around the world expect it to live up to their aspirations for peace, security, development and prosperity.

My delegation hopes that the deliberations of the Committee at its current session will contribute towards advancing further the disarmament process by drawing from the lessons of the past.

We wish that in the coming sessions of 1998 we can again make progress in our deliberations, and we hope that the spirit of cooperation, goodwill and flexibility will again prevail in this august assembly.

It is hoped that the General Assembly will give support to this recommendation.

The round table discussions addressed the disappointing progress in meeting human rights and gender targets set in the Declaration of Commitment.

However, activities were now gaining momentum and she hoped that genuine progress would be achieved by the special session of the General Assembly scheduled for 1999.
