The FAO Project for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in Mountain Regions has launched a new database of documentation on policies for sustainable agriculture and rural development in mountains.

By the end of 2002, agricultural land had been allotted to approximately 12 million farmer households and 91.74 of the households were granted with agricultural land use certificates, taking up 87.02 of the agricultural land area.

143. The Project for Promotion of Technology Transfer in Peasant Communities of the Sierra (FEAS) is carried out in five departments and has been able to involve women in agricultural extension and small scale fishing.

A great portion has been spent on the conservation and management of natural resources in the Cordillera de los Maribos, with active participation of the local farming population.

Agricultural incomes have dropped considerably as a result of the destruction of agricultural areas and the isolation of land and wells behind the wall.

Particularly, with a view to improving gender equality and position of women in rural areas, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) adopted a Gender Strategy in Agriculture and Rural Development to 2010 and Gender Plan of Action in Agriculture and Rural Development to 2005.

D. Land tenure and agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture has elaborated a number of plans to assist farms in these areas, and there has been some assistance provided by the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute.

Some youth state that the entrepreneurial spirit should be developed in rural areas, but not exclusively in the agricultural sector.

In some rural areas as many as 82 of women participate in agriculture work.
