A. Small island States

There is a growing trend of migration to the two main urban centres of the Marshall Islands Majuro, the capital, and Ebeye, close to the United States base at Kwajalein.

It comprises one large island, known as Grande Terre, and smaller islands known as the Loyalty Islands (Ouvéa, Maré, Lifou and Tiga), the Bélap Archipelago, the Isle of Pines and Huon Islands.

For that reason, Solomon Islands, as a member of the Alliance of Small Island States, urges the Group of Eight to reconsider the issue, because the environment has an impact on the physical survival of small island developing States.

Soon after, hundreds of Chinese fishing vessels approached the islands to assert China s sovereignty. These vessels have lately been joined by an increasing number of Chinese surveillance forces, which periodically enter the waters surrounding the islands, sometimes leading to direct confrontation with Japanese patrol ships.

Work on the formulation of a vulnerability index, resource mobilization, the Small Island Developing States Technical Assistance Programme (SIDSTAP) and the Small Island Developing States Information Network (SIDSNET) had been initiated by Governments, organizations of the United Nations system and regional organizations.

15. The Guam Legislature had communicated with the United Nations for many years and its members had presented testimony on behalf of Guam s people at United Nations forums.

The Heads of State and Government of AOSIS called on the UN System to enhance its support to SIDS.
