406. In 1991, the ideal number of children for all women of fertile age (15 to 49) was an average of 2.5 this figure does not differ greatly from that of 1981, which was 2.9.

In the year 2000, the figure went up to 705.

On the bottom here, this is the geologic timescale, and the numbers on it indicate millions of years from the present, so the zero here, that would be today.

By 2004, however, the corresponding figure had come down to 11.9 per cent.

The infant mortality rate declined to 17.5 in 1989 as against 140 in 1945 and 82 in 1950.
