Elimination efforts have reduced the number of annual neonatal tetanus deaths from 248,000 in 1997 to 180,000 in 2002.

It targets the six most fatal childhood diseases (tuberculosis, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and measles), as well as neonatal tetanus by means of the systematic anti tetanus vaccination of pregnant women and women of child bearing age.

(d) Immunization now protects an estimated 700,000 infants per year from neonatal tetanus and 120 countries have virtually eliminated the disease (i.e., reduced the national rate to less than 1 per 1,000 live births).

In addition, two new vaccines measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) and the combined diphtheria tetanus vaccine (dT) were introduced into the national immunization calendar in 1997.
