Are Services the New Manufactures?

Non agricultural activities include manufacturing, trade, services and transport etc.

Businesses associated with manufacturing represent 18 and those with services 12 .

This reason is equally important for both manufacturing and service SINTNCs.

The principal sources of growth in the economy have been agriculture and mining, complemented by the service industry and to a smaller extent manufacturing.

In a sense, it is actually more the product of the modern services sector than of manufacturing. And there are plenty of untapped opportunities for technological catch up in, say, health, education, and financial services.

A better approach would entail creating high quality jobs in modern service industries. As it stands, while the services sector accounts for more than 70 of employment in South Korea, its productivity growth rate remains much lower than that of the manufacturing sector.

While the debate about China s near term outlook should hardly be trivialized, the far bigger story is its economy s solid progress on the road to rebalancing namely, a structural shift away from manufacturing and construction activity toward services. In 2014, the services share of Chinese GDP hit 48.2 , well in excess of the combined 42.6 share of manufacturing and construction.

Consequently the local SME capacity in manufacturing or services decreases or disappears (Katz 2001).

Loan recipients continued to be drawn from the manufacturing and service sectors of the economy, ranging from home based industry to large scale factory production.

Though services account for 76 of employment, its contribution to overall economic growth is small, owing to low productivity. Indeed, value added per worker in the services sector remains just 40 of that in the manufacturing sector, and annual productivity growth was only 2 from 1980 to 2010 significantly lower than the manufacturing sector s rate of 8.2 .

Therefore, industrial energy efficiency is very important to increase productivity and to optimize energy intensity of manufacturing and services.

The second important group was manufacturing (14.5 ), followed by construction (12.5 ), community, social and personal services (11.2 ), transport, storage and communication (9.4 ) and wholesale retail trade (8.6 ).

A more developed financial system would provide alternatives to real estate as a store of value, thereby making home ownership more accessible. These issues will be examined carefully during the course of this year as the Chinese government and the IMF collaborate on a Financial Sector Assessment Program for China.

For female workers who suffered occupational injuries diseases, again agriculture dominated with 71.2 followed by the manufacturing 14.7 , community, social and personal services (9.1 ) and wholesale retail trade (3.1 ).

Services are in many respects the infrastructure of a consumer society in China s case, providing the basic utilities, communications, retail outlets, health care, and finance that its emerging middle class is increasingly demanding. They are also labor intensive in China, services require about 30 more jobs per unit of output than do capital intensive manufacturing and construction.

Already, services contribute the bulk of GDP in developing countries, even in low income countries where agriculture has traditionally played a big part. Young workers who leave the farm for the cities are increasingly absorbed into urban services jobs instead of manufacturing.

The Eurozone and American manufacturing surveys, which is scheduled for release next Monday, will be given attention and a service sector survey will be released on Wednesday.

First, America and the world were victims of their own success. Rapid productivity increases in manufacturing had outpaced growth in demand, which meant that manufacturing employment decreased.

Their respecialization opportunities were few and were often limited to developing international services, while most agricultural and manufactured exports faced stiff international competition.

Other experts highlighted the importance of looking at cases of R D in service industries, not just in manufacturing, given that the bulk of world GDP these days is produced by service industries, and R D is itself a service activity.

Service sector employment is sometimes viewed as more desirable than manufacturing since jobs in the service sector are seen to have higher status.

In the total employment by sectors in 1996, services share was 22.6 per cent, Government of Guam 20.2 per cent, retail 19.0 per cent, construction 11.1 per cent, transport and utilities 8.8 per cent, finance, insurance, real estate 3.9 per cent, wholesale 3.3 per cent, manufacturing 2.5 per cent and agriculture 0.5 per cent.11

The industrial sector is limited to small scale manufacturing activities, and tourism is not, as yet, very much developed.
