More stringent control of sulphur emissions can be exercised in special sulphur oxide emission control areas.

352. Annex VI prohibits deliberate emissions of ozone depleting substances, which include halons and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and sets limits on the emissions of sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide from ship exhausts.

Moreover, energy use has grown 16 fold during the twentieth century, causing 160 million tons of atmospheric sulfur dioxide emissions per year more than twice the total of natural emissions.
