Ongoing projects

The United Nations Office for Project Services began implementing projects for other United Nations organizations in 1996 (14 projects for five agencies).

Thirteen are to be implemented at the national level, nine at the regional level and four at the global level.

A lunar orbiting flight project and deep space exploration project would also be launched.

Projects were being conducted on flooding in Bangladesh, on spontaneous coal combustion in China, on earthquakes in Colombia, on landslides in Colombia and Nepal and on volcanic eruptions in the Philippines.

As a supervisor of the implementation of IFAD projects, the Office undertakes project supervision missions to assess the status of project implementation, identify operational problems and propose corrective actions to be taken.

Most of the Office s income derives from project implementation services.

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) played an important role in serving as implementing agency for some of the regional projects.

The final phase of a project cycle is a project evaluation once all activities provided for under the project have been completed.

Upon request, the Committee was provided with a list of projects which have experienced serious delays in implementation, including a project in Brazil and another in Pakistan for which the total delay amounted to 4.4 million.

The United Nations Secretariat, not the Fund, is responsible for 3 of the recommendations under implementation and 1 of those not implemented.

Five educational, four agricultural and one health project have been ongoing since January 2005.

A project management team was established in Gaza in November to begin implementation of the project.

The mission was concerned with the fact that so far the implementation of development projects was limited to a number of items.
