In addition, the UNEP Division of Early Warning and Assessment is involved in other global environmental assessment activities, such as the Global International Waters Assessment and the Global Marine Assessment, for which UNEP provides leadership and coordination, and the Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, in which UNEP is a key partner.

Market evaluations and assessments

The Programme for the Assessment and Control of Pollution in the Mediterranean Region (MED POL), the marine pollution assessment and control component of the Mediterranean Action Plan Barcelona Convention, recently prepared an assessment of the situation related to coastal litter in the Mediterranean.

Several joint assessment missions with the World Food Programme (WFP) also took place.

Moreover, it is necessary to institutionalize monitoring and evaluation procedures within the implementation and evaluation processes and establish a quality assurance system.

The Panel makes the evaluation and provides its report to the COP.

II. Assessment

Iceland has participated actively in the preparatory work of GMA.

(b) The Assessment of Assessments should be essentially science based.

The Scientific Committee evaluates these and by linking to effects, plays a central role in radiation risk assessment worldwide.

The FRA 2000 project includes a vigorous activity for country capacity building, allowing countries to participate actively in the assessment process.

The secretariat continued to follow closely the activities of the Land Degradation Assessment in the Drylands (LADA) and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), including participation in meetings of the Technical Advisory Group of LADA, and the Executive Committee and Board of the MA.

(d) The Assessment of Assessments will not involve making any new assessments about the state of the oceans or about the state of any particular component.

While a number of countries may complain of assessment fatigue , both in general and in relation to specific technical assistance and training, others are still calling for such assessments to assist in defining and refining their needs.

Some countries expressed their concerns about possible duplication with assessments carried out within UNCTAD and by other organizations, and questions were raised about the sources of information that would be used for the assessment.

A coherent methodology, which gives results that are comparable across the GIWA project, was developed and used to conduct regional assessments by 55 regional assessment teams.
