In a remarkable development, 271,991 Sierra Leonean refugees returned, of whom 190,515 came from Guinea, 79,915 from Liberia and 1,561 from other countries in the region.

By May 1997, nearly 2,000 Sierra Leonean refugees had returned, mainly from Liberia.

Should there be a desire for return, the Government, together with the international community, should seek to facilitate this.

These schemes are aimed at facilitating the rehabilitation and reintegration of returnees, and at helping the non returnee population to cope with the impact that the sudden and massive repatriation has had on the economy.

Despite the willingness of an increasing number of refugees and displaced persons to return home, pockets of entrenched political opposition to the right to return continue to block larger scale returns.

Recalls that the Abkhaz side bears a particular responsibility to protect the returnees and to facilitate the return of the remaining displaced population
