International POPS Elimination Network (IPEN)

The treaty is designed to eliminate or severely restrict the production and use of 12 persistent organic pollutants (POPs) (with provisions to include additional POPs in future), ensure environmentally sound management and chemical transformation of POPs waste, and prevent the emergence of new chemicals with POPs like characteristics.

As described in documents UNEP POPS COP.1 30 and UNEP POPS COP.1 INF 26, the Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention organized four case studies within the scope of administering technical assistance under the Convention through identified institutions across varying regions of the globe. The objective of the Stockholm Convention is to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants (POPs) The Convention requires Parties to adopt and implement measures aiming at reducing or eliminating the release of POPs into the environment with the view to reducing the exposure of human, animals and environmental organisms to them.

As a result of UNIDO's success in this field, the Organization has been granted direct access to GEF funds in the POPs priority area.

It may wish to start with such matters as the terms of reference for the POPs review committee and guidance to the financial mechanism.
