Land under cultivation is 68 per cent of the total and fields are 32 per cent.

Eight hundred hectares are under cultivation, and 4,000 hectares of pasture are used for stock rearing.

Other major producers include the five countries of central Asia (with a combined area of about 170,000 hectares under illicit cannabis cultivation and wild growth), Morocco (some 50,000 hectares), Mexico (some 7,000 hectares) and Colombia (5,000 hectares).

To address the problem of opium poppy cultivation, a demonstration alternative development project has been launched in the major opium producing area.

14. In 1967, 2,300 square kilometres of the West Bank and Gaza Strip were under Palestinian cultivation.

86. Projections indicated that the 1998 grain harvest will be poor at the end of the reporting period, rains were already late and erratic and the area under cultivation had been reduced as a result of continuous displacement and lack of sufficient seeds.

Further activities in this area are under preparation.

A rapid assessment survey undertaken by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime in March 2005 suggested a decline in cultivation in 2005 in contrast to the record levels of more than 131,000 hectares under cultivation in 2004.

According to the annual UNDCP Afghanistan opium poppy survey conducted during the 1995 96 growing season, the area under opium poppy cultivation was estimated to be in the range of 55,000 58,000 hectares, with an estimated corresponding yield of 2,200 2,300 tonnes of opium.
