Why control the births when we can increase the deaths?

Maternal health care has improved, with a 20 per cent increase in medically assisted births.

As a result, there had been a significant increase in the use of contraceptives and in the number of hospital births.

The child mortality rate for infants under one year of age declined from 44.4 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 21 per 1,000 births in 2003, and fell further to 18 per 1,000 births in 2004.

298. The infant mortality rate in Denmark has decreased from 8.2 per 1,000 live births in 1986 to 5.4 per 1,000 live births in 1993, (see para. 5).

In 2001, for instance, the proportion of births assisted by a skilled attendant amounted to 76 per cent and the proportion of home births amounted to 44.6 per cent of all births in a sample study, according to the child health survey.

This clinic was established in the María Cantera de Remón maternity ward of Santo Tomás Hospital in response to the increase observed in recent years in the rate of births and abortions among the adolescent population.

227. Since 1984, hospital births in the Argentine Republic have increased by 42.5 per cent and, in 1991, they accounted for nearly 96.2 per cent of all births.

305. With regard to the biophysiological risks, adolescent pregnancies appear to increase the likelihood of complications, including toxaemia, anaemia, haemorrhaging, cephalo pelvic disproportion, premature births and protracted labour.
