True, the current financial crisis has brought bank supervision to the fore. But monetary policy, not bank supervision, is the raison d être of central banks, whereas the banks can be well handled by the newly established European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB), which will be responsible for macro prudential supervision in Europe from January 1, 2011.

A sixth option especially where a country has carried out partially sterilized intervention to prevent excessive currency appreciation is to reduce the risk of credit and asset bubbles by imposing prudential supervision of the financial system.
