In 2001, for instance, the proportion of births assisted by a skilled attendant amounted to 76 per cent and the proportion of home births amounted to 44.6 per cent of all births in a sample study, according to the child health survey.

The child mortality rate for infants under one year of age declined from 44.4 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 21 per 1,000 births in 2003, and fell further to 18 per 1,000 births in 2004.

The under five mortality rate went down from 58 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 42 per 1,000 births in 2001, and dropped further to 31.5 per 1,000 births in 2004.

The percentage of women dying during childbirth has declined from 43.2 per 10,000 live births in 1998 to 41.5 per 10,000 live births in 1999.

The number of births among women who are older than 35 has been increasing 10.3 of all births in 2001, 9.8 in 2000 and 9.0 in 1999.

Hospital births have increased in number (coverage).

Eighty six per cent of births are assisted by qualified attendants.

Approximately 12 per cent of births take place in private hospitals.

For example, in Latin America, they range from 15 (out of 1,000 live births) in Chile to roughly 100 per 1,000 live births in Bolivia and Haiti.

It is also higher in the case of mothers aged under 20 or over 40, and it increases with the numerical order of births and with shorter intervals between births.
