Since Lithuania's accession to the European Union on 1 May 2004, the inspections under the EURATOM safeguards have been carried out by European Commission inspectors.

Upon accession to the European Union in 1995, the safeguards agreement between the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM), the European Union non nuclear weapon States and IAEA entered into force for Austria and the 1972 safeguards agreement was suspended.

With regard to the additional protocol between EURATOM, the European Union non nuclear weapon States and IAEA, which was signed in September 1998, Austria concluded all necessary steps on the national level for its entry into force in 2001.

Pursuant to Article 4 of the NPT Slovenia uses nuclear energy only for civil purposes, while its nuclear programme is under the relevant control of the IAEA and EURATOM, in compliance with the Safeguards Agreement and its Additional Protocol.

After Lithuania became a member of the European Union in May 2004, a transition from a bilateral safeguards agreement with IAEA and its Additional Protocol to the trilateral ones between the EU non nuclear weapon States, EURATOM and IAEA was required.
