During that year, 63,000 persons completed secondary education, 34,000 primary education and 40,500 initial literacy training.

Primary education is imparted in six grades for children and adolescents aged 6 15 its completion, which is officially certified, is an essential requirement for access to the upper secondary level.

Secondary education has been compulsory since 1993.

Corresponding targets require that by 2015, all children should be able to complete a full course of primary schooling and that gender disparities be eliminated in primary and secondary education by 2005, and at all levels by 2015.

Secondary basic and secondary vocational education

Basic education comprises three levels pre school, primary and secondary.

In the pre war period, 80 90 per cent of pupils who finished elementary school continued their education in secondary schools.

From the standpoint of education, the most numerous group are people with primary education (52.2 per cent) followed by those with basic vocational education (19.8 per cent) and incomplete primary education (17.8 per cent).

The State is improving education processes both in general education institutions and in secondary vocational and higher learning institutions.

In global terms, there are few girls who can conclude the basic education successfully. Among those who complete their education, a few indeed, and due to difficulties of access to General Secondary Education, and or professional, one can say that still few can go any further if there is no will from the Government to effectively promote the education of girls.

Both primary and secondary education are free of charge.
