Cooperatives have helped to bring information and services to far flung rural communities, empower workers, and expand financial services, healthcare, education, and housing. In doing so, they have transformed the economic and social landscape in countless communities.

Law 2810 2003 on Agricultural Cooperative Organizations amends the terms of establishment of agricultural cooperatives, favouring the participation of women in the cooperatives.

The Secretary General's report on cooperatives in social development (A 60 138) focused on the role of cooperatives in poverty eradication, arguing that their social responsibility and concern for the community made them a useful model for promoting the empowerment of the poor and their participation in poverty reduction strategies.

Partnering with civil society

According to the International Cooperative Alliance, a cooperative is a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise. But, beneath this definition lie rich notions of voluntary association, accountability for strategic decisions, and concern for the communities that cooperatives serve.

Regional cooperation in the economic, social and related fields

Noting with appreciation the potential role of cooperative development in the improvement of the social and economic conditions of the indigenous peoples and rural communities,

(i) UNICEF aims, through its programmes of cooperation and by working with other members of the UNCT, to promote the rights of women as equal members of society and to support their full participation in the political, social and economic development of their communities.

The path forward set out in the Millennium Declaration is clear and efforts to date have had positive results.

Since the integration process was first and foremost a personal one, for social partnerships played an important role.

At its fifty first session, the General Assembly requested the Secretary General to ascertain, in cooperation with the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives, the desirability and feasibility of elaborating United Nations guidelines aimed at creating a supportive environment for the development of cooperatives (resolution 51 58).

(d) Raising civil society awareness and facilitating civil society support for the work of the United Nations on social development.

In India the INDISCO programme has been piloted in the Mayurbhanj district of Orissa. A cluster of 40 tribal villages has been supported in establishing and managing legally recognized cooperatives or cooperative like self help organizations, providing loans and credit, health and education.
