13. Also, the Office has continued to actively collect materials for human rights education produced at the international, regional, national and local levels, and access to this collection has been made available to human rights educators who have visited the Office.

In 2004, 63 UNICEF country offices supported peer education activities.

50. Following training in the use of a curriculum prepared by the Cambodia Office, two NGOs, LICADHO and the Khmer Youth Association, and the provincial offices of the Centre for Human Rights conducted education programmes for prison officers.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) continued its technical assistance programme in support of the rule of law and administration of justice, and in human rights education and awareness.

14. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and several international and regional Decade partners, alone and in cooperation with the Office, have undertaken human rights education activities in the period under review.

Public education was virtually free and every time a public school was opened, particularly in a rural area, it gave girls a greater opportunity to be educated.

The representative of the Department at the United Nations Office at Minsk gave a lecture at a human rights seminar organized by the Institute of Higher Education.

Some educational and informational work in the field of human rights has already been undertaken by the Office, for the benefit of both lawyers and the public.

56. The Office prepared a detailed comprehensive survey of human rights education and training programmes in the Kingdom of Cambodia with a view to Cambodia apos s participation in the United Nations Decade of Human Rights Education.

Indeed, given that primary education was compulsory, families that prevented their children from attending school were fined.

40. The Ministry of Education in Chile has informed the Office that some related activities have been undertaken at the school level, such as the implementation of the education and democracy and women programmes, which include the dissemination of human rights pedagogical materials in schools, the training of teachers and the organization of school competitions.

In line with the Millennium Development Goals, UNHCR has continued to promote equal access to education for refugee girls.

UNESCO's Cairo Office assisted the Education Students Society and Science and Math Education Centre of the American University in Beirut in organizing the eleventh annual Science, Math and Technology Fair on the weekend of April 16 18, 2004, at the American University of Beirut.

Ms. Argaña Mateu (Paraguay) said that the Women's Bureau of the Office of the President had established a national network of offices to provide educational, legal and counselling services to women.

With regard to sex and family life education, the Population Education Office of the Ministry of Education conducts awareness programmes for teachers and students and supplies teaching guides (see tables 18 and 19).

16. The Office has intensified its technical cooperation activities to strengthen national capacities in the field of human rights, including human rights education and public information.

OHCHR worked with the Judicial Education Committee to integrate human rights into the training programme, with the Police Academies in Gaza and Jericho to build human rights into the training curriculum for law enforcement officials, and with the Ministry of Education regarding human rights education programmes.

In addition, Amnesty International has started issuing a newsletter, HRE Human Rights Education, which is being widely disseminated (and to the second issue of which the Office contributed an article on the Decade for Human Rights Education).

The main focus of activities continued to be ensuring access to primary education and supporting access to secondary and higher education where possible. In particular, UNHCR made continuous efforts to promote girls' education in Africa by working closely with UNICEF, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the Inter agency Network for Education in Emergencies and local organizations such as the Forum for African Women Educationalists.

UNESCO's Beirut office will collaborate with selective experts on the role of STE programmes in promoting women's role in socio economic development.

The World Organization of Former Pupils of Catholic Education informed the Office that it contributes to human rights education by actively participating in international meetings in that regard.
