3.4 FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION (FAO) ACWW Consultative Status since 1947.

On food aid, while there is general understanding that food aid should not cause commercial displacement, what constitutes genuine food aid remains to be defined.

Since then, the Secretary has conveyed additional information to FAO.

34. In 1998, some 1.2 million Afghans will benefit from WFP s total allocation of 106,590 tons of food commodities.

Use of the 1991 local producer prices from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations ( FAO ) instead of the market prices from FAO and the Iranian Ministry of Commerce.

Food security went beyond the problem of production, since it involved access and distribution, including international trade in food and other commodities.

In the case of FAO, any such amendments would have to be presented to the FAO Council, preceded by consultations with the staff.

While food security remains a national problem, the production of food commodities has increased. This has reduced the need for food aid which was previously provided to the general population.

On 13 August 1996, the Secretary conveyed to FAO those data required by the Compliance Agreement to be provided to FAO from time to time.

Iran uses market prices provided by FAO and the Iranian Ministry of Commerce.

In 2002, CI participated in the consultations between WFP and civil society.

Preliminary findings from the WFP Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) crop and food supply assessment mission in May 1998 estimate a cereal deficit of 680,000 tons, of which 560,000 tons will be met through commercial imports and 120,000 through food aid.

In addition, WFP has injected over 10 million into the economies of Gaza and the West Bank, by local purchases of wheat flour, olive oil and other food commodities.

This project is being carried out in coordination with the World Food Programme and the American Chamber of Commerce.

Following consultations with donors, it was decided to modify the form of food support with effect from January 1997.

In addition, WFP conducts a regular policy dialogue with its major operational partners through an annual WFP NGO Consultation which is jointly managed and organized by the NGOs and WFP.

Its policy on foods derived from modern biotechnology has been developed in consultation with FAO, WHO and World Trade Organization.

23. The Basic Texts of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) also provide for formal arrangements for consultation, cooperation and liaison with NGOs.

27. WFP s support to the project is the provision of food commodities such as hot, balanced meals for the pupils and staff members of educational institutions.

28. WFP also reported that in pursuance of Security Council resolution 986 (1995), commercial activities involving food contracts have taken place in Turkey and Jordan, as approved by the sanctions committee on the supply of commodities to Iraq.

For these people, forests are a source of food, energy, shelter, medicine, commerce and spiritual well being.

The guidelines were negotiated and agreed in the Intergovernmental Working Group (IGWG) established by the FAO Council in response to the invitation by the World Food Summit five years later (2001).

In addition, 50 women from low income households participate in a food for work scheme as volunteers assisting project staff in the distribution of food commodities.

Food prices are rising fast, placing some basic commodities out of reach for a growing portion of the population.

It is in general consultative status with the Economic and Social Council, and in consultative status with the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

With regard to rations, the Advisory Committee was informed that the present rations supplier had the capacity to provide fresh and frozen food for the additional troops under the current contract.

According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Fisheries Report issued in 2004, the two main types of fisheries in the Territory are small scale (commercial) and recreational fisheries.

On the fully commercial side, the mobile revolution is creating a logistics revolution in farm to retail marketing. Farmers and food retailers can connect directly through mobile phones and distribution hubs, enabling farmers to sell their crops at higher farm gate prices and without delay, while buyers can move those crops to markets with minimum spoilage and lower prices for final consumers.

WFP has also implemented a pilot agricultural project targeting 500 small farmers in the southern Gaza Strip, whereby food commodities have been distributed to beneficiaries against a cash payment representing less than 30 per cent of the local market value of the donated commodities.

Heightened urban food insecurity, due to inflation and commodity shortages, has also been reported.

In the mission analysis, 215,000 tons could be met by commercial imports, leaving a food aid requirement of 32,000 tons.

Also requests the Secretary General to ensure that all missions monitor and evaluate the quality management systems of rations contractors to ensure that food quality and hygienic conditions are in accordance with established standards

Quantity conversion factors will be reviewed and agreed upon with the understanding that the factors provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for agricultural products will be taken to the maximum extent possible.

64. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) FAO contributed to UNCTAD s former Standing Committee on Commodities in the session examining the impact of the Uruguay Round and UNCTAD participated in the World Food Summit in November 1996.

The Board had also observed that there was no continuous cooperation on the monitoring of rations among the missions and Headquarters and had recommended that the Rations Management Manual should be finalized expeditiously, that the rations management standard operating procedures of missions should be reviewed and that the performance standards for rations vendor evaluations should be refined and rolled out to all missions.
