It is time to broaden the agenda of global financial reform, which so far has focused on an essential but still limited set of issues, particularly financial regulation. Reform of the global reserve system must be part of that broader agenda.

After the financial crisis, the United States enacted the Dodd Frank Act to overhaul American financial regulation, with the aim of reducing the risk of another financial meltdown. But it did nothing to reform repo lending arguably the weakest link in the financial chain.

The reform process was often inspired by international financial institutions.

The need to overhaul the international monetary and financial system was one of the basic lessons of the global financial crisis. While there have been major, albeit incomplete, reforms of international finance, efforts in 2009 and 2010 to reform the international monetary system including the proposed changes at the IMF have led to no significant action.

The ongoing reform of the multilateral financial institutions was noted.

It was also suggested that the international financial system needs to be reformed in order to ensure greater global financial stability.

The Government had undertaken major reforms of financial and economic legislation in order to improve the competitiveness of the national economy and integrate it into the global economy.

The IFIs have adopted many reforms aimed at integrating social and environmental protection and poverty alleviation into programmes.

If health insurance exchanges don t work, we can always reconsider the public option. But if the initial approach to financial reform doesn t work, we face the prospect of another financial crisis every bit as serious as the last.

In order to protect the interests of investors better, China now must find ways to ensure such cooperation among its existing financial regulators, including by revamping the relevant institutions. As it pursues far reaching financial sector reform, now is the time to do so.

Reforming pay arrangements in ways such as those proposed here would help ensure that firms and the economy don t suffer in the future from the excessive risk taking that has contributed to bringing about the financial crisis. A thorough overhaul of compensation structures must be an important element of the new financial order.

It also provides for assistance in the reform of the criminal legislation.
