Weimar Russia Revisited

Weimar 2013?

The phrase Weimar Russia first appeared about 13 years ago, at the height of the confrontation between then President Boris Yeltsin and the Supreme Soviet that ended when Yeltsin s tanks shelled the parliament. The meaning was clear to all Weimar Russia, like Weimar Germany, signified a weak republic attacked from within by nationalists yearning to restore authoritarian ways.

11. As reflected in the constitutional provisions since the Weimar Constitution, a separation between religions and the State has been introduced.

And of course the big mystery is Germany itself, seemingly lifted from history by its own economic buoyancy. Can German politicians abandon Weimar style economics before they are hit by Weimar style political disintegration?

In the 1920 s and 1930 s, Germany s traditional Christian values and culture had collapsed under the attack of two atheist ideologies communism and Nazism. Both destroyed the Weimar Republic, acting as a kind of evil twins who hated each other, yet shared a common hatred of Christianity and democracy.

84. As regards legislation, the provisions of the Constitution fully guarantee freedom of religion and belief, and the provisions incorporated from the Weimar Constitution governing relations between the State, the churches and the religious communities are very comprehensive.

However, the Catholic and Protestant churches continue to be the dominant Churches in Germany, historically linked to the State, and subjected to a positive separation under the Weimar Constitution and the subsequent Constitution ensuring cooperation with the public authorities in common affairs, in accordance with their status as legal persons in public law (cf. Part I.B and C).

Reports have also been received of collaboration between FDLR and the Mayi Mayi and between FDLR and elements of FARDC.

22. Apart from the question of the status of cults, the Constitution, in article 140 (Weimar Constitution, art. 137, para. 3), guarantees the right to freedom of management.

That scheme is both absurd and dangerous. After all, the word Weimar draws its infamy from the pact with the devil that German conservatives and royalists made by backing Hitler.

Tensions remain high especially in north eastern Katanga, where several clashes have occurred between FARDC units and Mayi Mayi groups.

In the late 1990 s and the early years of this decade, the problems that incited fears of a dysfunctional state seemed to fade. But over the past 18 months, the specter of Weimar has once again begun to haunt Russia.
