Sterilized intervention usually doesn t work if assets in advanced economies and emerging markets remain perfectly substitutable, inflows will continue as long as interest rate differentials persist. But the demand for emerging market assets is neither infinite nor perfectly substitutable for the assets of advanced economies even for given interest rate differentials because these assets have very different liquidity and credit risks.

OIOS therefore recommended that the account be closed and its balance transferred to the interest bearing convertible account.

In a liberalized capital market, the undiminished risk that the yuan might appreciate means that investors must be compensated by a higher interest rate on dollar assets. But interest rates on dollar assets are given in world markets independently of what China does.

In the first, the receiving State knows that one its residents, citizens or other taxpayers has a bank account or other interest bearing investment in the transmitting State, but the receiving State does not know the details of the account (name of the account, financial institution where the interest bearing account is located, identity of the payor of the interest income).

The low interest rate on long term Treasury bonds has also boosted demand for other long term assets that promise higher yields, including equities, farm land, high yield corporate bonds, gold, and real estate. When interest rates rise, the prices of those assets will fall as well.

The major items are 47,680,000 in interest on funds held in interest bearing deposits and in current accounts with banks and 12,604,000 in adjustments of payable related to the prior period s budget.

The higher interest rates go, the better are investments in bonds, which compete with investments in other assets such as stocks or homes. Higher interest rates also raise the cost of borrowing to buy these assets, which may diminish demand for them, exerting downward pressure on their prices.

9. The funds held in cash at 31 December 1997 amounted to 66.5 million, including interest bearing bank deposits of 65.1 million.

Conventional multinational financial institutions are increasingly offering Islamic assets, and there is growing interest in them in London, Luxembourg, and other world financial capitals.

This would ultimately benefit the reserve assets owners, who, by virtue of accumulating large surpluses, have a similar interest in world economic and financial stability.
