48. It is estimated that for the past two years, the Israeli authorities have demolished an Arab owned house every two days and that 249 houses were demolished in 1997.

Of course, the German people decided otherwise they took history into their own hands by insisting that the Wall come down. The rest of Eastern and Central Europe quickly followed, knocking down their own barriers to freedom.

Since September 2000, the Israeli army destroyed over 2,990 shelters in the Gaza Strip that were home to 28,500 people,4 and demolished or damaged more than 12,000 homes in the West Bank.2

The Israeli human rights organization Betzelem has reported that the rate of house demolitions had risen 75 per cent over the past three years and that 1.16 houses were demolished every day in the occupied territories.

The study added that 210,000 trees had been uprooted and 1,599 houses demolished.

The report noted, based on several sources, that 109 demolitions had recently taken place.

Throughout 2004, Israeli authorities in occupied East Jerusalem destroyed 115 Palestinian residential buildings, including over 170 residential units.14 In 2004, the Israeli army destroyed 1,443 homes, affecting about 14,481 persons in the Gaza Strip.4 During the first nine months of 2004, the Israeli army demolished an average of 120 residential buildings per month in the West Bank, and 77 homes per month in Rafah, in southern Gaza Strip.2

The same authorities had already demolished 80 houses this year in the city of occupied East Jerusalem, in the context of a decision taken by the Israeli Government to demolish 500 other Palestinian houses.

Some 28,000 Palestinian homes were threatened with destruction at any moment.

A witness stated that houses had been demolished before the expiry of that period.

As at August 1998, some 1,800 Palestinian homes were reportedly targeted for demolition and were being destroyed at the rate of about one a day.

In Jerusalem, the Special Rapporteur visited Silwan where 88 houses are subject to demolition orders.

According to the report, some 400 Arab owned houses had been demolished since 1987.

On 8 January 1997, the officer supervising the 4 January destruction went back to Sitta Abril and ordered the destruction of the four shelters made of wooden poles and straw mats set up as makeshift classrooms and arrested the headmaster and seven teachers.
