The International Year of Deserts and Desertification, 2006 will coincide with the tenth anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

The designation by the General Assembly of 2006 as the IYDD coincides with the tenth anniversary of the entry into force of the UNCCD.

Having reviewed the interim report of the secretariat on the status of preparation of the 2006 International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD) (ICCD COP(7) 13),

Major initiatives would be undertaken during the Year on key sectoral issues such as youth and desertification women and desertification civil society and desertification and poverty, hunger and desertification.

Despite attempts in 1977 by the United Nations Conference on Desertification to adopt a Plan of Action to Combat Desertification, desertification continued to intensify.

The momentum generated by the IYDDInternational could be of paramount importance for the UNCCD implementation process by creating a multiplier effect at the national and international levels, thus setting the basis for the further implementation of the Convention.
