The Secretariat is mandated under the Convention to coordinate its activities with the secretariats of other relevant international bodies and conventions.

The confirmation of the status quo regarding the location of the secretariat meant that there was no need to consider practical arrangements for the transfer and hosting of the secretariat.

Between 2000 and 2003 the SI International Presidents visited and had regular consultations with the Secretariats of the UN and its Specialised Agencies in New York, Geneva, Vienna and at UNESCO Paris.

The Open ended Working Group may, furthermore, wish to consider requesting the Secretariat to consult the secretariat of the International Labour Organization, noting the work already undertaken by that organization regarding the abandonment of seafarers.

Recommendation The Executive Secretary is of the view that the institutional linkage of the secretariat to the United Nations has worked effectively and thereby resulted in several benefits to the secretariat and the Parties.
